Digital Art

Art whose conception, production, or presentation depends substantially on digital technologies, including computational, interactive, networked, and digitally manipulated forms.

Digital Art describes artistic practices in which digital technology is integral to a work’s conception, production, structure, or presentation. Its conceptual precedents lie partly in avant-garde experimentation with machines, systems, abstraction, and new forms of perception. It emerged more distinctly during the 1950s and 1960s, when artists, mathematicians, engineers, and programmers used electronic signals, photographic recording, computer laboratories, algorithms, and plotters to produce images. Increasing access to personal computers, imaging software, networks, and digital displays subsequently expanded it from early computer-generated drawings into a broad field encompassing generative, robotic, interactive, virtual, and internet-based art.


Digital Art has no single visual appearance. In photography, it may involve scanning, compositing, extensive image manipulation, algorithmic transformation, three-dimensional modelling, data visualization, artificial intelligence, or combinations of photographic and computer-generated elements. Works may emphasize seamless illusion, visible pixels, repetition, simulation, synthetic colour, digital layering, glitches, variability, or the continuous generation of new images. They can be presented as prints, projections, screen-based images, websites, installations, virtual environments, or interactive systems. A scanned analogue photograph or digitally captured image may form part of Digital Art, but routine digital capture, colour correction, or printing does not necessarily make a photographic work Digital Art; the digital process must substantially affect its form, meaning, behaviour, or mode of reception.


The term overlaps with computer art, new media art, digital photography, generative art, net art, and artificial intelligence art. Computer art usually emphasizes computation, while new media art is broader and may include electronic, networked, and time-based technologies that are not exclusively digital. Generative and AI-based practices form important branches rather than synonyms for the entire field. Debates concern whether digital works possess a stable original, how artistic authorship is distributed between artist, software, dataset, and system, and whether automated processes reduce or transform artistic agency. Their reproducibility, dependence on changing hardware and software, and capacity for interaction also complicate conventional ideas of ownership, exhibition, conservation, and the boundary between a finished artwork and an ongoing process.
