This monograph presents 68 photographs Emmet Gowin made after marrying Edith Morris in 1964, focusing on his wife and her extended family in Virginia. Accompanied by a short personal text by the photographer, the book considers intimacy and the relationship between photographer and sitter. Influenced by Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Harry Callahan, and Frederick Sommer, Gowin’s family pictures move beyond private records; some use a circular image format determined by the camera lens. For this 2009 edition, Steidl scanned the photographs from vintage prints and slightly enlarged the book format without changing image sizes.
