This monograph presents Julian Germain’s Classroom Portraits, made from 2004 to 2012 in schools across North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Beginning in northeast England, Germain carefully arranged pupils and photographed them during lessons using long exposures. The detailed images record students, desks, books, blackboards, artwork, and handwritten notes, documenting both the diversity and shared characteristics of contemporary classroom life around the world. The photographs are reproduced in an oversize format.
