This limited portfolio presents Robert Mapplethorpe’s X series, published in 1978: photographs of homosexual sadomasochistic scenes. Along with his Y Portfolio of flower still lifes and Z Portfolio of portraits of African-American men, X represents one of the artist’s three principal subjects. Mapplethorpe linked these bodies of work through his pursuit of “perfection in form” and envisioned them displayed together in three rows.
