This monograph presents Charles Fréger’s Wilder Mann project, photographed across eighteen European countries, from Scotland and Finland to Portugal, Greece, Bulgaria, and Italy. It documents centuries-old seasonal masquerades in which participants embody the mythological Wild Man through costumes representing bears, goats, stags, wild boars, straw men, devils, and monsters. These ritual transformations celebrate the cycles of life and the seasons while revealing the diverse forms this shared European tradition takes.
