In 1975, photographer Mary Ellen Mark was tasked by The Pennsylvania Gazette to document the filming of Milos Forman's adaptation of Ken Kesey's novel "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" at the Oregon State Hospital. During her assignment, Mark encountered the women of Ward 81, the state's only locked security ward for dangerous women, shortly before it closed in 1977. In February 1976, Mark and writer Karen Folger Jacobs spent 36 days living on the ward, capturing photographs and conducting interviews. This book revisits their project, now with an additional 10 images in a new hardcover edition.
