This monograph presents Roger Ballen’s The Theatre of Apparitions, a seven-act photographic project that extends his practice across photography, drawing, installation, and theatrical performance. Inspired by marks made on the environment, Ballen used spray paint on glass, scratching and removing it to admit natural light. The resulting images feature black, cave-like spaces populated by fossil-like faces, fragmented body parts, and ghostly shadows, exploring subconscious thought, emotion, and the boundaries between the physical and spiritual.
