This monograph presents Joseph Rodriguez’s photographs of Spanish Harlem, New York’s oldest barrio. The work depicts a predominantly Latino neighborhood shaped by poverty, crime, drug abuse, AIDS, and chronic unemployment, while also documenting its role as a center of Hispanic American life. Rodriguez photographs Good Friday processions, the Dominoe social club, Bomba Plena dancing, stoop life, and Old Timer’s Day, tracing the neighborhood’s Puerto Rican heritage, African American community, and newer Latin American arrivals.
