R.J. Kern's book, The Unchosen Ones, presents a series of portraits focusing on Minnesota 4-H members alongside their farm animals. Taken initially in 2016, these young farmers, despite their dedication, did not secure awards at the 4-H competition. Kern's use of lighting and setting imbues each portrait with depth, exploring themes of youthful commitment and the weight of tradition. In 2020, Kern revisited the subjects to photograph and interview them, capturing reflections on their agricultural experiences and future aspirations. The book includes diptychs pairing the original and new portraits, enriched with vibrant farm landscapes.
