Portraits and Dreams revisits Wendy Ewald’s collaborative project with schoolchildren in the Appalachian Mountains, begun in 1975. Ewald gave the children cameras and interviewed them about growing up in the region, combining their photographs and words to portray family and rural life through their perspectives. The work addresses love, loss, violence, death, and new life while exploring children’s engagement with photography. This revised and expanded edition of the 1985 book spans 35 years and includes contemporary photographs and stories by eight participants from the original publication.
