First published in 1992, this new edition of Larry Sultan’s project returns to photographs made during periodic visits to his parents’ home in Southern California throughout the 1980s. Combining contemporary photographs with home-movie stills, conversations, Sultan’s writings, and family memorabilia, the book constructs a narrative of domestic life, love, and family performance. Its sequence moves between documentary observation and staged imagery, questioning the distance between photographer and subject. This edition presents a new edit and includes previously unpublished photographs.
