This photobook documents Kazakh fishers on the frozen Ishim River in Astana, where they catch fish beneath the ice in temperatures reaching minus forty degrees. Set against the city’s rapid post-Soviet development and its image of global modernity, Aleksey Kondratyev photographs the fishers’ improvised shelters, made from discarded plastic packaging and rice bags. The project considers how imported materials and international trade intersect with local nomadic practices and individual lives.
