Forest is a monograph documenting Yan Wang Preston’s search for mature trees uprooted and transplanted amid China’s rapid urbanization. The project began with a 2013 encounter in Xialiu, a Yangtze River village cleared for a dam, where a 300-year-old, 70-ton tree was sold and moved to a hotel under construction in Binchuan. Preston photographs such displaced trees in new concrete environments, examining development, the commercial relocation of nature, displacement, and the meaning of home.
