This monograph presents Anders Petersen’s photographs of Café Lehmitz, a bar on Hamburg’s Reeperbahn frequented by sex workers, pimps, transvestites, laborers, and petty criminals. Petersen first encountered the café in 1962, at age 18, and returned in 1968 to photograph its regulars after renewing old relationships and forming new ones. His candid images portray the now-vanished red-light-district venue as a close-knit community with its own identity and dignity. First published as a book in 1978, the series also provided the cover image for Tom Waits’s album Rain Dogs.
