This retrospective surveys four decades of John Divola’s photography through ten major series, from Vandalism, made in Southern California in the 1970s, to the Theodore Street project. Incorporating Polaroids of sculpted objects, appropriated stereographs, and landscapes featuring the artist himself, the work explores photography’s relationship to painting and conceptual art. Curatorial essays address existentialism, 1970s California photography, and natural and built environments, while an interview with Simon Baker examines the Theodore Street project.
