First published in 1939, An American Exodus documents the Depression-era migration of more than 300,000 rural workers to California in search of farm labor. Dorothea Lange’s photographs, made while she and her husband, Paul Taylor, worked for the Farm Security Administration in the early 1930s, are combined with Taylor’s text and migrants’ oral testimony. This facsimile reproduces the original volume, portraying poverty, economic displacement, and westward migration during the Great Depression.
