This book is a detailed exploration of 80 portraits of Native Americans taken by photographer Edward Sherriff Curtis between 1900 and 1930. It forms part of a long-term project by The Capital Group Foundation, with analysis by Upham from the University of Tulsa and Zappia, a doctoral candidate at the University of Santa Cruz. The portraits, sourced from negatives preserved by Curtis’s grandson, are enriched with cultural stories and myths that Curtis gathered, which were published in "The North American Indian." The book includes historical and contextual essays, and is copublished by the University of Washington Press and the Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa.
