In 1968, Josef Koudelka captured the Soviet-led invasion of Prague during the end of the Prague Spring, an event marking the cessation of political liberalization in Czechoslovakia. Before this, Koudelka was a theater photographer who had just returned from photographing gypsies in Romania. His photographs of the invasion, smuggled out of the country, were initially published by Magnum Photos under anonymity to protect him. These images, which later earned him the Robert Capa Award, are compiled in a monograph featuring nearly 250 photographs, interspersed with contemporary press quotes and texts by Czech historians, documenting this pivotal historical moment.
